Beer, beer beer. I used to drink spirits, a lot of spirits and luckily saw the light. Haven't touched the top shelf now in over 10 years, certainly saving me from an early grave. Beer is much better!

could it be when admin has had one of his famous blackouts.. lose of memory... and is now in total denile of the event in question..... yes
come on admin i hear that when you go out ( sometimes not every night) that you claim to have gone home but you were somewhere else... maybe you have answered the question... admin drinks beer but never remembers a thing about it the next day.
so if that is what beer does from you .. lose of memory..and sometimes breaking their ribs... it sounds as if drinking beer is a dangerous thing.

Beer is healthier, but it seems to make me fatter. One could argue that being overweight is unhealthy, therefore beer is unhealthy. However, it seems to me that spirits will tear up your insides (liver, kidneys and whatnot) more than beer will. Any medical experts care to weigh in on this one?

Your mostly correct, C-Bert. Beer does indeed have more calories, therefore your weight can increase if you drink too much, so long as you continue to eat. As far as it being healthier, it largerly depnds on the amount of alcohol consumed not the volume of liquid. A standard drink has about 10grams of alcohol. If you drink a 330ml can of beer or a 100ml glass of table wine or a 30ml of straight spirits you are drinking approximately 10 grams of alcohol, depending on the alcohol percentage. If you drink straight spirits it will do more damage to your eosophagus and stomach than if you use a mixer, but damage to the liver, kidneys, brain and heart will be cuased by amount of alcohol not the type of drink.

Well, I was on the whisky yesterday, Red label (I know, but cheap)... I woke up outside my bedroom (on the balcony) naked at around 3 am... I dont know how I got home yesterday (and I did not drink that much)...
If you really want to know which is the healthiest I would suggest that you read in Mens Health, they had a very interesting article about it, and the myths about spirits... Doyen, I did not know that a former nurse would qualify as a medical expert. (not saying that your answer was not good)...
PS. how large is a standard drink?)

A standard drink is any drink that contains 10 grams of alcohol. i.e. 1 can of beer, 30 mls of spirit ( unless your'e drinking lao khao), 1 glass of red wine.

Not a former nurse, just having a break. You'll be happy to know that I'm not a career teacher. I'll be a nurse again within 2 years. I never claimed to be a medical expert, but I think I know more than some of the clowns masquerading as doctors in this town.

Who is masquerading as doctors here in town? The people in the hospital? The Thais in the street giving you drugs? Who? ? ?
All I did was to superglue my toe, and you can not even see traces of that...
