More killed by boats in thailand

Post by Guest on Wed Jan 13, 2010 7:32 am

Just thought I'd get in before Admin and copy and paste some news off the net.

Killed by speedboat

12 January
One diver is dead and another missing after the pair were run down by a speedboat off the coast of southern Thailand.

According to Thai media, a 40-year-old Russian man was cut in half when the twin-engine boat ran over him about 300m off the shore near Koh Larn, Pattaya.

On the evening of 12 January, local time, his diving companion remained missing, subject to searches.

The divers were reported to have been diving in a designated scuba zone but surfaced just as the boat went through.

The boat’s 47-year-old helmsman is reported to have been arrested and charged with reckless driving.

I read that yesterday - but it is Pattaya news and I don't think it'll be of that much interest to many. Daily suicides/murders and other incidents involving foreigners do tend to get monotonous.

Actually, the article I read had the diver outside of the designated zone. I don't dive but would it not make sense to have some kind of buoy or inflatable object marking where divers are - especially in areas that are congested with tourist boats? Not that difficult, surely.

The proper thing to do would be to despatch an inflatable surface marker as they are about to start their ascent. They can then use this to help during the safety stop at 3 meters.

The problem using these, especially when there are a number of divers, is that the jet skis start to use them for weaving in and out of.

Sounds like this guy was already at the surface, so would have been about as visable as a bouy....... no match for a speed boat driven by a chimp though.

If as stated, he was out of the designated zone, he may well have surfaced in boating lanes and the accident happened.

Either way, I doubt we'll ever find out. RIP indeed.
RIP

He was not cut in half... He was cut and all the inners were cut up... He died on land from the injuries... Tough way to go!I wonder what will happen with the captain of the boat? Was he at fault or not? Anyways Rest In Peace!
