Hyperthyroidism

Post by Admin on Mon Oct 19, 2009 10:30 am

About 5 - 6 weeks ago, maybe even longer I started to get sore eyes, the left one in particular. It got so bad that I didn't like to drive at night and then it worsened and started protruding, as if it was being pushed out of its socket from the inside.

As usual, I ignored it and after pressure from the Mrs eventually went to see an eye doctor. The first thing the doctor did when I saw her was to feel my neck. I'm going 'No, no, no', it is my eye that has the problem. Anyway, after about 5 minutes she said that I have to go to a hospital and have some blood tests done. Hmmm, I thinks - eye problems and you need blood tests??

So, I then shoot off down to Nakarin and have an armful of blood extracted. 2 hours it will take to do the tests so I just hang around for that time. An hour and a half later I'm ushered by a young nurse to see a doctor. To cut a long story short, he tells me I have 'Hyperthyroidism' and gives me all this medicine that I have to take for two years.

So as soon as I got home, I switched the old laptop on and started reading up. It is actually quite a common illness affecting over 23,000,000 in the US alone. Women are 8 times more likely to get it than men and you're more prone to getting it between the ages of 30 and 50. Apparently it is when your thyroid gland either is making to many hormones (as in my case) or not enough.

So, in conclusion, if you start having an irritable eye I'd suggest getting it checked out as soon as possible.

When your thyroid gland is producing too many hormones, it's Hyperthyroidism. When it produces too few, it's Hypothyroidism.

Thank you for that. I must be making too many then as I have Hyperthyroidism. What do you know of it Doyen, any experiences?

I know quite a bit about it. It sounds to me like you have a relativley mild form of it. The more severe form - where your thyroid gland pumps out shite loads of the hormone Thyoxine - is called Thyrotoxicosis or Graves Disease. The body becomes insensitve to heat. You sweat excessively, can't sleep, can't sit still and you have a fine tremor. Basically, you have energy to burn, but not in a good way. Your Thyroid gland at the front of the neck near the voice box can become enlarged, requiring surgery in severe cases. If you see someone with big bulging eyes, there's a good chance they had severe Graves disease at some point. Marty Feldman was the most notable one I can think of. In very severe cases people can't blink and they have to have there eye lids sutured closed while they are treated. I never really saw anyone with full-on Graves disease, but I did study it.
