New Immigration Laws .... maybe

Any foreigner wishing to enter Thailand on a Tourist visa may stay in the country no longer than 270 days in any 12 month period.

Any foreigner entering Thailand on a non immigrant multiple 'B' visa must show work permit on entry. When exiting Thailand they will be required to submit a tax clearance certificate.

Any foreigner entering Thailand on a non immigrant 'O' visa must show proof of A copy of bank statement showing not less than 800,000 Baht or an income certificate with a monthly income of over 65,000 Baht, or a combination of income and savings totaling more than 800,000 baht.

Any foreigner entering with no visa, may do so only 6 times in any 12 month period.

A police clearance certificate will be required for application of any non immigrant visa.

So, was any of this ever confirmed?

I was at our local immigration office just the other week enquiring about changing from a non B to a non O.
I was told (in super fast Thai translated by the wife) B400,000 in the bank, no mention of an alternate show of monthly income.

Thai embassy UK web site says 400,000 in the bank or 40,000 per month income.
TVisa says the same. But neither have not been updated for some time it seems.

My guess is it depends on the area and the person in charge at the time.

What classes as an "income certificate"? Is that a knocked up letter from your employer or a tax receipt?

Don't know how or if the rules have been enforced for Non 'B' holders but I have only ever had a Non 'O'.

To obtain that I initially didn't have to show any money but as it was a multiple entry, I had to do a border run every month. For the extension (giving you 12 - 15 months) I had to show B250,000 in bank. This was many moons ago and that has since been increased to B400,000 in a Thai bank which must have been wired in from overseas AND had to have been in your account for a minimum of 3 months. Alternatively, a joint monthly income of B40,000/month was acceptable. I think the rules for joint incomes are no longer acceptable though.

When I ceased being self-employed and became an employee, my salary was enough (even though it was under the 40k threshold) to get the annual extension/s ..... which I still have until this December! .

I did work for a Government school if that made a difference

Remember, your right to stay in the country is only valid as long as your visa/extension is, no longer!

Ok, some more on this.

The 40,000 per month rule is still in place, but it is not joint income, must all be earned by the visa applicant.

3 things are required to prove this income:

1. Tax receipt
2. Income certificate from employer
3. Employment contract showing salary

We were told the reason for this is that in the past, people had just paid tax on an alledged income of 40,000. Items 2 and 3 are aimed at adding proof - although I'm sure its no skin of the employers nose to confirm they pay you 40,000.

For me, it serves as no real benefit. I'd be shelling out extra cash for what exactly?
Granted, if I jumped ship or got fired, it'd give me some time to find another job without having to leave the country, but then the new employer too would either have to pay 40,000 or be in on the fiddle.

I figure doing a border run if worse came to the worse would be a lot cheaper.

As for the government school.... I figure its more a case of who you know and how much of a tip you are prepared to give them.
