Where I work I've been pretty lucky in that most of the time our internet in the office has been coming in at a fairly good speed. However in the last 3 - 4 weeks it has just got stupid, painfully slow. Eg: 3.5 minutes just to get to the home page of this site, unable to open Hotmail and we won't even mention pictures/video. Now, the funny thing is that it only seems to be my station. While others around are happily surfing away, I am wanting to throw my comp out the bloody window. This has been ...

Was working dilligently away today in my office, looked up and saw not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 Benjama teachers. Now these lowlifes people, trying to find educational tips, or ideas for their own classes certainly came to the right place.

........ unfortunately, we know all about these underhand tactics and kept our trade secrets very close to our chests. It was a good attempt though but not quite good enough!

Has anyone noticed how many new 'International' schools there are in the area?

Nakhon International City School / Oonrak International Bilingual School (Surat) / Bluewater International School (Surat) / British International School (Phuket) / The International School of Hatyai & International English.

Surely all of these schools cannot be International Schools opening this year (with the exception is BIS). What say you?

Hi forum users.

I'm thinking of applying for a job as a teacher in Nakhon. However, I've never visited (never even been to Thailand) and so would like your honest opinions on the place, the people, the average school working conditions and pay. At this point, I've been teaching in England for 8 years but have never taught abroad. I keep hearing about what a lovely place Thailand is and so am thinking it might make a nice change.

Any advice / opinions shared greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Since I've been here I've heard as probably we all have, varying stories about what schoolchildren get up to. Now, I'm sure we were all not totally innocent when at school - I know I wasn't exactly 'innocent'.

Anyway, I've just seen a video of a local Mattayom 2 girl (not my school btw) and some of her, erm 'colleagues' doing things that would put some adults to shame.

My question: Are today's youngsters as 'innocent' as we were in our day or has society changed them, for better or worse? ...

A lesson in school is only as good as the last lesson - that's the way I think. There are so many different variables that can make a lesson fall flat on its face - lack of planning, unmotivated students, topic being taught, day of the week and even time of the class amongst others which can all be ingredients in having a bad class. Of course, a well planned class with interesting and the correct resources greatly increase the chances of the class being a success. No resources and a 'teacher' ...

A few days ago I was approached by one of the English Department heads here in Nakhon asking me to place an advertisement for an English teacher at her school. Requirements, not too many to be honest but one of them was that the applicant had to be a native English speaker.

Since that ad was placed I have had maybe 40 - 50 responses and most of the applicants (70%+) are from countries where English is not the native language (Cameroon, Ghana etc)

So, once I've played all my silly Facebook games, checked my e-mails and got rid of the previous night's beer I'm at a loss as to what to do. Plan for your classes the following day? done already. Go home? Sometimes I shoot off early and sometimes I don't .... depends who is hanging around the office. I hate em!

It's gotta be worse for the guy next to me, he has no classes at all!

Now, I don't know the reasons why, but unless it is for extreme family reasons or if the KGB/Mafia is after you, should your priorities not be towards your students/school and at least finish the term?
When I started at my present place of employment, the office staff had to share computers. Then, there were not enough computers to go around so we used to actually talk to each other. Now, a few years later every member of the staff has his or her own computer. It has just turned 8am and out of the 7 people in the office at the moment, not one word has been said in the last 5 minutes at least. Are computers making people unsociable?

Being a Filipino teacher in Thailand cannot be easy, unless they are lucky enough to work in an EP or a SMTP. They are generally treated as inferior to naitve speakers. This is often in spite of the fact that they possess an Education degree. Imagine you are the only teacher in an office who holds an Education degree, yet you receive less than half the wage of the native speakers and get only 1 month of holiday time a year while everybody else gets 3 months off. Hardly fair.
