Somali pirates have seized three Thai fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean in what the EU Naval Force said was the furthest off-shore attack to date. The three vessels, carrying a total of 77 crew members, were hijacked on Sunday, an EU force spokesman said.

He said that the attack took place far outside the area in which the EU force operated, about 1,200 nautical miles (2,222km) from the Somali coast.

The pirates were said to be taking the fishing boats back to Somalia.

The swine flu pandemic has grown "unstoppable'' and all nations will need access to vaccines, a WHO official said Monday, as seven new deaths were reported and a study raised fresh concerns.

Britain, Thailand and the Philippines all reported deaths on Monday, while Saudi Arabia shut an international school after 20 students were diagnosed with the A(H1N1) virus.

Burma's burning ambition to acquire modern missile technology and to upgrade its conventional weapons is no longer a secret and, if left unchecked, could pose a destabilising threat to regional stability.

Thailand, its most prominent historical enemy, should be concerned - its military leaders would not like to see a Burma in possession of missiles that could easily lead to a tit-for-tat arms race. Also, of course, there's the generals' chronic fear of the West, heightened last year when foreign ...

For the first time, an image of a memory being made at the cellular level has been captured by scientists.

The image shows that proteins are created at connections between brain cells when a long-term memory is

formed. Neuroscientists had suspected as much, but hadn't been able to see it happening until now.

The experiment also revealed some surprising aspects of memory formation, which remains a ...

about Portugal's decriminalization, which removed criminal penalties in

2001 for personal drug possession and emphasized treatment over

incarceration. The UN had suggested the policy was in violation of

international drug treaties and would encourage "drug tourism."

Two co-pilots took control after Fred Lenell, 60, collapsed in the cockpit. Dr Julien Struyzen, who was among the 247 passengers, was summoned but found that he was already dead. Captain Lenell's devastated wife Lynda said: "The co-pilots thought he was sleeping, that he had nodded off, and he couldn't wake him."
