RAWAI: -- An American man was found stabbed to death in his hotel room near Ya Nui Beach and a search has been launched for the prime suspect, a British Muay Thai boxing student named so far only as “Mr Lee”.

Road accidents, drownings, suicides and murder all contribute to the death toll.

More than 50 foreign tourists have died in Phuket so far this year, according to statistics released by the island's top police officer at this week's consuls' meeting.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pekad Tantipong said 52 foreigners died between January 1 and August 17 this year.

Thailand has overtaken Taiwan as host to the third-largest number of 7-Eleven convenience stores in the world, behind only Japan and the USA, media reports said yesterday.

The number of 7-Eleven outlets in Thailand reached 5,500 this year, surpassing Taiwan's 4,000 stores, but behind Japan's 12,000 stores and the USA's 6,000, the Bangkok Post reports.

Police say a Toyota sedan owned by a Phuket person is believed to have been the vehicle used by
